Far Cry 3 Questions

I have a few questions regarding Far Cry 3.

#1 I can't seem to level up. I have about 7 skills available, yet when I click on an available skill, nothing happens. The ones that are available are the take-down & drag, horticulture 101, & the swim 2% faster skills. Do I need to complete more side quests or perform a certain task?

#2 Lots of times I notice when looking for loot, relics, or letters, I cannot seem to find them. I am right over the marker, yet I cannot find anything or any door, or whatever. Do I need to excavate them with a shovel, and if so where I do get one?

#3 Is SCUBA equipment available in the game, or do I need to swim towards the surface to take a breath?

Solution
1. Certain skills require certain tasks to be done to unlock them as well as having the mandatory skill point.

2.This happened to me lot of times and no you can't use a shovel. You can't find things because they are below you. Sometimes there is a cave entrance below or a ladder/vine going down a hole. You have to look for things, you know. Exploration enhances the appeal of fc3.

3.No, Jason needs to get to the surface to take a breath, unless he sprouts gills(which is unlikely to happen). There is a recipe for a syringe called deep dive or something - it enables you to stay underwater as long as the syringe effect is active. It is somewhat usable.

Hope this helped!

Solution
1. You said available, so I figured you meant those skills weren't greyed out/locked. Other than that you need enough points to buy them. Thus you should be able to equip them.

2. FC3 is actually a little better when this happens than FC4. Reason being, despite FC4's more detailed and realistic map, FC3's map shows little terrain features where cave entrances are. So look on the map nearby around the loot item you marked, and check for little black marks (usually thins strips of black). Once I figured this out, it was easy for me to find underground items.

3. Yeah swimming is sans scuba or snorkel gear, and at times the limited lighting can disorient you. For this reason, besides breath syringes (which I found unnecessary), make SURE you put a waypoint on the item you're searching for first.
