What (not too power hungry) upgrade to a Athlon II x2 240e?

Hello,

my main desktop has a AMD Athlon II x2 240e. It's a dual-core 45W TDP cpu.
I have recently replaced the 5yr old motherboard with a AM3+ capable motherboard [Asrock 970M Pro3] to enjoy the luxury ;) of DDR3 memory, SATA 3 and USB3.

As next step I'm considering about upgrading the CPU, if it's worth the effort.
I'm not doing any heavy gaming, the conditions where I most load the computer is when I fire up a couple of virtual machines (hence why I bought a motherboard with 4 DIMM sockets, as my system mostly eats RAM).
An important requirement is that I would like the next CPU to be also relatively power efficient, at least at idle.

The two options I see are:
- hunt on the second-hand market for an Athlon/Phenom II x4 type (e.g. the 620e), and get a modest increase in performance.
- select one of the less power-hungry FX models still on the market. They are rated from 95W TDP, but how do they behave at idle?
EDIT: Actually, the FX-8320E doesn't look bad for the purpose

Any hints?

FX 8320E or 6300 are very good options. The 8320E uses around 90W at load, and you can overclock it using less voltage than a regular FX chip.

However, for single threaded apps, there won't be a world of difference between your cpu and these two unless you overclock.
