video card running at 80C !?!?!?!

i was playing tomb raider today and riva tuner was telling me my video cards are running at 80 degrees C. both of them.

I have 2 msi r7850 OC twin frozr, and its only doing this today. it wasnt like this yesterday. WHAT DO I DO!?!

msi afterburner is telling me the same thing. my room smells like burnt popcorn. omaiga!

Solution

Tweak the fan profile, that's the only thing I can suggest. If your case looks "filled up" (a picture would be appreciated) it might be preventing the air from circulating properly.

Yes, some other people have reported the same problem with that specific card. Maybe you could try changing your GPU fan profile? 80º C is not THAT big of a deal, but it's quite a bit higher than I'd like.

Its not only that specific model if you had this in mind its simply the whole series having bad cooling solutions, I'm just surprised its actually happening with Twin Frozr cooling.
I had XFX 7850 Core edition which had a terrible cooling solution and at day 1 i had to get AC Accelero S2 with manually fastened 120mm fan. Torture test temp went down from almost 100C to 50C.
But again thats a different story this cooling shouldn't be that bad... can you make some screenshot from MSI afterburner with clocks, fan speed and temps after a few mins of play?

when i would game on my single 7850 it would never go past 55*C and i would run it over clocked. but now i have a second card running in crossfire and 3 added fans to my case its running at 80*C now. yesterday i was playing battlefield 3 and it never got past 65*C

i turned off my computer and let it cool down, but now im gonna play again and see what happens. i'll screen cap riva tuner and all that.

i think i know what it might be, i have a front fan that is blocked by 3 hard drives, i only use 2. im going to unplug the one i dont use and remove it. but yeah im going to post a pic. i just need to go to tinypic or something to post it up here first.

Ok, waiting to see it, but that must be the problem.... I mean bad airflow with those AMD cards? You're asking for high temperatures :p.

i removed the unused hard drive, and noticed a small difference. like 2 degrees. but i decided to lower the resolution from 1080p to 900p and so far its been a big improvement. sorry for not uplaoding the pics, i've had to work overtime every day this week so far, and i barely have time to do anything because i usually start work around 6am.

here is a pic of my case with the three hard drives.

and i decided to remove the hard drive i wasnt using. as you can see i have fans right on the side of the case but still it gets pretty hot!

and here is msi afterburner after like 30 minutes of gameplay. the gpu1 is the used video card i bought recently. my original is gpu2.

No problem. From what I can see, there's indeed some airflow problems (as you also noticed, by removing an HDD and consequently lowering the temps). 900p puts let's of an effort in your GPU, thus reducing temperature, and as I think you know, the GPU is the piece of hardware that produces the most heat in your PC (generally). What temps are you getting now? I think I see a 61ºC, but I'm not sure.

yeah, my original video card runs the coolest in the bottome most pci-e slut. so far it hasnt gotten over 70*C the used video card i recently got is in slut 1 thats the run that runs the hottest at 77*C. i havent had time to switch the around and see if i get the same readings because ive been working 12 hours a day recently but its like 95*F here in los angeles and its dryer than toast with no jam lol

okay so i switched the video cards around to see if it was just the amazon card was running hot, but when i plugged my original card in the first slut, the second card stays on idle. it doesnt want to run. :( even with benchmarks. the card stays idle

(edit) never mind, crossfire disabled itself for some reason. that explains why my screen went blank for a few seconds while playing battlefield. lol

Nice to know you fixed it by yourself. As I already said a million times I wouldn't worry too much about it running at 80ºC Max (well, I would becauase I'm myself, but the general majority wouldn't :p).

okay so far. i found a solution to my problem. i have since left my video card in the first slut, and the amazon card in the second. i installed a enermax white cluster fan in the front ( i can do better but enermax is bae, they treated me right in customer service lol ) and its an improvement over the thermaltake fan i had installed a while back. i set it to max speed and moved my storage drive from its previous location to the bottom of the case to allow more front intake airflow. i installed a new enermax vegas fan in the rear because the old case fan sucked bawls. i said it to max speed, and moved the thermaltake fan i had in front to the top for more exhaust. and so far everything is better. on most games i just lower the resolution from 1080p to 900p and if it gets too hot i just lower the AA. depending on the game. and so far it stays around 65*c max. even when overclocked it doesnt get as hot.

also i installed an A/C in my room. now i can overclock even more. lolololol

well thanks you guys for the help. i wasnt comfortable with my video cards getting this hot. so i panicked and bought more fans lol. but i have found a solution for now. thanks you guys.

the noise doesnt really bother me. i mean i live under the path of planes landing at the airport. there is a local freeway like 300 meters away. and i use my headphones to listen to music. so yeah. thanks again. hope we meet again.

Wow, that takes quite some luck. I'm quite fortunate to live in peaceful village, though...............

Internet speeds of 10Mb down and 1Mb up....... ADSL can just go for a spin.
