Hi,

So I built a desktop a while back and I did not buy a wireless adapter. Now that I am at school I am only allowed to connect the desktop with ethernet cable. They do not allow us to connect our phones to the school wifi. I was thinking of adding a wireless adapter to my build, specifically this one:

I was thinking of using the internet through my Ethernet to create a wifi hotspot using Connectify so my phone can connect to the wifi. I was wondering if this wireless adapter would be compatible with Connectify and if Connectify would do the job.

Additionally, any suggestions about getting a different wireless adapter which is cheaper would be appreciated and still works well. Also, any suggestions about a program like connectify but does not have a timer in the free version.

A link for connectify is: http://www.connectify.me/hotspot/

Thanks in Advance!

That is the purpose of a router it makes all devices behind it appear as a single device.

Connectify works with almost all wireless nics but it tends to be somewhat unstable if you use your pc for anything much at all. What you have in effect done is make your expensive computer into a stupid nic card for your phone
It would be easier to use a router.

Now if they do not allow routers then your plan to use your PC as a router/hotspot is also in violation. Most routers are just stripped down pc running a linux variant for their OS.

It is also not like they can't easily see your hotspot you create, many of the better wireless AP systems can detect and even fairly accurately locate unauthorized wifi devices.

So if you are allowed to have wifi hotspots then connectivity will work but I would still opt for a router.

We are only allowed to have one device on ethernet so if I used a router, my desktop would loose connection. Would the adapter I suggested work with the connectify, though?
