Windows is caching 5gb worth of memory?

In my task manager it ways my programs are caching 5gb of my memory. I have 5gb of ram in use so in total it is using 11gb. My friend who built the same computer with me has windows 7 and his is not caching. How do i make it so my PC does not do this?

Caching is good. Its the whole point of RAM. When you have free ram, it means your ram is not being used at all.

Caching means windows stores recently used (or likely to be used) programs on RAM, so when you want to use them, they load quickly. Obviously, the more ram you have, the more programs windows can cache, therefore, "speeding up" your computer.

if i start using more programs will it un cache the memory? because having only 5gb left seems really low to me

Yes cached memory is also known as memory in "standby". When actually active RAM needs to overwrite standby data it will.

ok because the thing that scares me is the ram usage keeps building. not mucch since i posted 1-2% usage but still

The longer your PC is on, the more it will cache stuff.

Don't worry about it. Windows has sophisticated memory management and works great for normal users.

If you are experiencing slow downs, then you should look into your memory usage(and other things).
