Other option is Displayport which is a more interesting port. G-Sync and free sync are and will be using displayport. The new version is around the corner also.
HDMI can render 4k@30Hz on multiple matrix.
Only drawback is the use of multiple matrix to render 4k. Basically your 4k monitor will be deal as two display next to each others (not sure if HDMI 2.0 treat your display as a single matrix). It is not a big issue, but it can get a little bit buggy sometime. For example your display audio can be misread by Windows. A small bug from MS, but still a pain to just change the side of the display with the audio codec. This happens when you switch resolution from 4k to 1080p.
Also, the only VGA with HDMI 2.0 right now on the market are the GTX 900 series... even there I am not even sure if all of them have one.
As for Displayport, well all graphic cards have one. Just look for a full displayport cable 1.2. All 4k monitor should have a displayport port since it is the way to go (if it doesn't, get another display).
