Hey guys, I was just wondering if this cpu is good for gaming, that being that it has 4 cores and it is 4.2 ghz.

Pc specs:
MoBo: Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 Desktop Motherboard
Gpu: Radeon r9 270x toxic
Psu: 1000w psu
Ram: 8gb g skill ripjaws

So I was just wondering if that is a good cpu or if there is a better one for about the same money, as my cpu budget is about $100. thanks to anyone who answers.

Sounds good man. I agree, $160 is a good deal. Maybe even sacrifice the Asus mobo and go for their subsidiary company ASRock. I have one of their motherboards, it is really good, and cost about $60 (AU dollars). Big savings there, and you can get a better CPU instead!

Even then, I've posted a solution below, take a look at that.

I have the 6300, and I'm starting to see it lag behind, so I would recommend something better. Unless you aren't planning to play very demanding titles. The thing about amd cpus is the a 6 core 3.5ghz cpu by amd can lose in performance to a 4 core 3ghz intel cpu. Intel cpu's single core performance are just far superior, but a lot pricier. It really depends on what you want to play, so, what do you want to play?

To be honest, I would suggest lowering your gpu budget to a 260x (I have one, runs BF4 on ultra easy peasy) and going for something like an i5 or an FX 8320. I'm running an 8320, 260X combo and it runs all those games on high settings at around 50fps at 1080p. I find that cheaping out on your CPU is an easy way to screw up a build

Yeah. My 260X works pretty well for a cheap-ass card.
What is your budget? I would like to suggest an alternate build that could be better for the same price.

my budget is $700. That is including the fans, card reader, keyboard, and optical drive. without those, maybe $600. but I still think that $160 for a r9 270x toxic is a good deal. I can find a way to get a better cpu and fit it into my budget if that would be the way to go.

The reason an Intel quad core is better than the FX-6300 is because Intel says how many cores it has not including hyper-threading while AMD says the cores including hyper-threading. The FX-6300 is actually a 3 core processor with 2 logical cores for each physical core. While processors like the i5-4960K, i7-4790K, and the new unlocked Skylake processors say 4 cores because Intel says how many physical cores when they all have 2 logical cores per physical. Technically AMD isn't lying but it is a way they kind of trick people into buying their products instead of Intel's. They make up for it with processor speed and cheaper prices.

ano this is an old post but people might actually think amd cores are same as hyperthreading when there clearly not .... amd fx8350 has 8 cores ,,,,, fx 6000 has 6 and fx 4000 has 4 ,,,,, 2 cores share some resources but they are real cores ...its not like hyperthreading where 2 threads are going through one core there is 2 cores in each module ...while the single cores maybe not as good as intel fx cpus are still very good i own 8350 and its awsome at multitasking much better then the i5 4460 system i had before
