So I've been trying to overclock my Geforce GTX 970 with MSI Afterburner. I've been using Batman: Arkham Origins' benchmark to check the performance on max settings. I increased the core clock by 90 and the memory clock by 250, this gave me an average 80 fps, where as without the overclock it would be about 40. I saved the profile and enabled Startup, but when I started my computer the next day, the overclock was gone even though in Afterburner the settings were still applied.

I tried again today and was somehow able to overclock my card after restarting my computer. It seems to only work when it wants to, I don't why it just can't stay overclocked, instead of having to adjust and apply the settings and restarting my computer a number of times.

Is there something I'm doing wrong here? Did I damage my card?

I might have figured it out. I saved the profile, applied, and then I restarted my computer. I got around 100 fps, so I know that it is taking effect now. But it seems like a hassle to do this every time I start my computer again.
