Usually RAM isn't compatible in the way you have it set up (sticks of different amts etc)... Try just the 2x4 or just the 1x8 and see if both of those give you 8... Probably is that you have a x4 in the first slot and that's the only one being read. sorry for necro :p

Not only a necro post it's factually wrong. RAM works just fine with odd amounts.
