Hey,

I've never purchased RAM before so I was just wondering if I could get some help on what a good choice would be.

My computer is a:
HP Media Center m8125x PC
Windows Vista Home - 32 bit
Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 @ 2.40Ghz
Currently has 2GB DDR2 Memory (two 1 GB sticks)

This is memory specs from manufacturer's site
:

  • Dual channel memory architecture
    Four 240-pin DDR2 DIMM sockets
    Supported DIMM types:
    PC2-4200 (533 MHz)
    PC2-5300 (667 MHz)
    PC2-6400 (800 MHz)
    Non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
    Supports 2 GB DDR2 DIMMs
Supports 8 GB on 64 bit PCs
Supports 4 GB* on 32 bit PCs

Just wondering what brand/DIMM type I should go with? I want at least 4GB total RAM (currently 2GB). Will be using computer primarily to run a web crawler and other scraping/automation software.

Thanks

333 is actually 667 when you consider dual channel operation.
Buy the 2gb 667 stick.
Ram speed is not much relevant to intel processors.

If you later want, add 3 more to get your max of 8gb.

I am not so certain that I would spend much on upgrading a obsolete pc.
Here is the Kingston ram memory search results for your pc.
It looks like you could add a 2gb module of either 667 KTH-XW4300/2G or 800 speed KTH-XW4400C6/2G

http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/search/Default.aspx?DeviceType=2&Mfr=HEW&Line=Pavilion%20Media%20Center&Model=38889&Description=Kingston_System_Specific_Memory_for_HEW_Pavilion_Media_Center_HP/Compaq_-_Pavilion_Media_Center_m8125x

Run cpu-Z and see what speed you already have installed. and match it.

With a 32 bit os, 4gb is the max you can use, and even then, you will see only about 3.5gb.

Look at the SPD tab.
There will be a drop down for 4 slots.
You should be able to see the details if what is currently installed in each.

Another way would be to download memtest86+.
It is a bootable standalone program to test ram.
It should identify what you have.

Ah I see. Okay.

It says:

DDR2
1024 Mbytes
Max Bandwidth: PC2-5300 (333 MHz)

So can I just go with the ones you recommended? A 2gb stick of "Kingston KTH-XW4400C6/2G 2GB 1X2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL6 240PIN DIMM Memory Module"?

Or should I be looking for PC2-5300 (600 MHz) -- dont see any (333MHz)?

What I want to additionally do is upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit and eventually buy 3 additional 2gb sticks to get 8gb RAM. So whichever will work best for that in the longer term as I will be getting rid of the current stock RAM entirely.

Thanks
