Slot spacing on most Z87 and Z97 boards will be "3 slots" leaving a gap of 1 slot between dual slot cards.
Whereas a motherboard with a PLX chip or native support for more then two GPUs will more likely have 2 slot card spacing so 3 or 4 dual slot cards can sit together and still fit in a 7-8slot ATX case.
