Hi I'm looking for ideas for building a gaming/fun PC. I have very little experience with mobos and don't know what i really need. I'm going to go for i7-4790k and MSI 970 most likely (possibly SLI in future). Also an SSD and HDD for storage, with 16gb of 1866-2133MHz ram. I posted about the actual build in another forum on this site, but I was looking for more precise advice on the motherboard. One reply I got recommended the ASRock Fatal1ty Z97X KILLER (Intel LGA 1150). I've also read good things about the Asus Maximus VII's. What is my best option for this application (playing with OC, playing some RTS/Total War/Civ 5)? I don't know how much of a difference the MOBO makes in the build, but I'd rather not spend an excessive amount on that if it could be better used somewhere else in the build.

Thanks,

RS

Go with the Hero, you won't regret it, I have the Z87 and grabbed a Z97, the Z87 was the best of the Z87 mobos, and the Z97 is much better (both of mine in sig).

Thanks for the reply!

I've read about some of the Asus Maximus, but there are several different models. Are you talking about the Hero, Ranger or a different one?

From what I recall at the moment, the Ranger was a slightly stripped down Hero? But at the same time it will still have more features than the ASRock in the prior comment won't it?

Thanks for your response. I did a little research on the Z97 Pro Gamer and it looks pretty solid. However, since I will be getting a wireless adapter anyway, would it make more sense to get the Z97 Pro? Are there any other differences besides the addition of AC and maybe some other perks that aren't super critical? The Z97 Pro and Maximus Hero VII are the same price on PCPartPicker at around $209. Which would you recommend between those 2?

Thanks,
RS

As Tradesman1 said go with the VII Hero. Its a beautiful board packed with a LOT of gaming features and the board gives easier overclocking in comparison to its rivals.

Best board I have ever owned.
