Build a gaming PC with i7 4790K and Z97 Motherboard

Hi everyone,

I've researched a couple of weeks of how to build a great gaming PC that I will use to render videos, SO visualization and gaming ofc so I want to build something with:


  • Processor: i7 4790K
    V-Card: MSI GTX 970 4G
    Mobo: Not decided yet
    RAM: 16GB
    SSD: 120GB Samsung 850 Evo
    HDD: 1TB (for now)
    Power Supply: Not decided yet
    Case: Not decided yet

About the Mobo, I read about the Maximus VII Formula is not good for gaming so I have many doubts about which is the best and will be perfect if you can write some recommendations.

About my budget, maybe between $1000 and $1200

Overall the build is excellent and will serve you well.

In terms of the motherboard do not underestimate the Formula as it is an excellent board for gaming. However if I were you I would recommend you the Maximus VII Hero. Its very similar to the formula except it doesn't have a motherboard armour and that cross-chill hybrid cooling thing.

The Maximus VII Hero is the best bang for your buck, but if you want the Formula go for it.

In terms of the case I would recommend the Corsair 450D, its a really nice case with lots of airflow that will keep your system cool :)

I'd go (and did) the Hero, great mobo, much improved from the Z87 Hero which was the best selling and rated Z87 (both in sig)....the Formula is another good choice, but more if you plan a complete water cooled rig, it has a built in water block.
