So I think I am starting to understand pcie lanes more now. But still have questions. I am going to get an i5-4590 with the ASRock z97 extreme4.
The z97 chipset provides 8 pcie2.0 lanes right? And the cpu provides 16 pcie3.0 lanes. Is there any way to plug a gpu to a pcie3.0 slot but have it run at pcie2.0 x8 mode by the chipset instead of the cpu?
An example would be if I use 2 GPUs in 2 was SLI x8/x8. What happens if I plug a non gpu PCIe 2.0 card into the 3rd PCIe 3.0 x16 slot ? Will the cpu split it into x8/x4/x4 or can I set it so the CPU run x8/x8 and the chipset picks up the 3rd card at x8 but at PCIe2.0 instead of 3.0.?
