Good morning!

Ill start this by saying im the definition of a novice when it comes to computer hardware.

Ok, so a few weeks ago I was in the middle of a 4 hr wow session and all of the sudden my monitors went black then the sound in my headphones made a scratching sound and went silent. Meanwhile, my tower stayed on and i could hear the fans continuing to run.

I wisely dismissed this issue and restarted and kept playing.

A few days later it happend again during another session. So, I restarted but this time the computer did the same thing after about 45 mins.

This continued to repeat more frequently so I decided to fix it myself because im amazingly talented and never seem to mess anything up (kappa).

I have a gtx 480 and this mofo is so loud it sounds like a jet engine. But, I realised it seemed like it got wayyyyyyy quieter since the shutoffs started happening. So I thought I'd see I could clean the fans.

I opened the tower and the first fan I saw was my heatsink fan (I had no idea that it was for processor). So, naturally I unclipped it and poke around and struggled to get it clipped back but did eventually (without applying thermal paste).

Then I took my gpu and ram out for some reason. I put it back and the tower would just beep. So I researched it and I needed to reseat my ram. I did that then I went to turn the computer on and the keyboard, monitor and mouse wouldn't light up/turn on.

I took the tower to geek squad and they tested the psu and said it was fine. They put a new gpu in and said it was ok. Im assuming they deduced it was the motherboard from process of elimination.

Btw if this was the Oscars the music would've started three paragraphs ago.
ill wrap it up soon.

So, I was wondering if there is anything else I can do? Or should I just suck it up and build another bc this one is pretty old. Anyway, thanks for reading or you're welcome for giving you something to read at work?

Solution
Assuming then that everything was plugged in correctly, it probably is the motherboard. Might want to make sure all the power connections to the motherboard are in tight first.

Unclipped the fan or the whole fan with heatsink? If you took the sink off the CPU as well then it needs to be put back on correctly with TIM. (thermal paste.) You said they put a new GPU in and it was ok, so either your old one is dead, or it wasn't hooked up correctly. If this is an older unit I'd dust it REALLY well. Have any friends who really know what they are doing? Take everything apart, clean, apply new TIM and hook back up correctly. It's not hard to do, but I know what I'm doing really well.

I unclipped the fan that was on top of the processor.

They said took my gpu out and put in one that they have and know it works.

But yeah its super dusty inside.
so you think a good cleaning and some paste might help?

Ya, when I unclipped it the metal part was still on the mobo.

Also yes the new gpu they put in didn't fix the problem. They tower would turn on but the monito was still black and the keyboard and mouse didn't work.
