Hello :). I am interested in playing Star Citizen on highest everything when it comes out, with Oculus Rift consumer version (which is supposedly going to have a 1440p screen, 75Hz, so that is what should be achieved). At the moment I don´t play any other games than LoL, and my laptop can run that maxed out no problem so I really do not need my desktop computer atm. I also have an ssd lying around so I wouldn´t need to buy that.
ACTUAL QUESTION:
Would it be worth it for me to sell my desktop pc, for around 700€-750€ and then buy a new gaming PC with the money (and maybe add some money to at myself)
Or just upgrade my graphics card.

  • -CURRENT SETUP-
    CPU = AMD FX-8350, AM3+, 4,0GHz, 8-ydintä
    GPU = AMD Radeon 7950 3GB
    RAM = HyperX 8 GB 1600 Mhz CL9 DDR3
    MOBO= Asus CROSSHAIR IV FORMULA
    PWR = OCZ ZX 1000W
    HDD = Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM - 2TB
    CASE = Zalman Z11 Plus (siniset valot)
    CLR = 212 EVO

Update: 2ndQuestion if I were to sell it for 750 now and buy a new pc would it be eqcuivalent or even better?

Solution
Id wait till star citizen is offically released, then build pc from there, will get you better components for same prices.
UNless there are other games you want to play right now besides LoL

This is what I myself assume too, but since I have no need for using my computer in the meantime, I would need to know if it would be worth it just to sell it now and then later on buy a more powerful pc with the money.

It's somewhat difficult to say since the game is a long way from finished and optimized at this point, but I ran it just fine at 1440p on an i7 4770K with a GTX 780; I was getting about 47 FPS, so I'd say R9 280X/290/290X in Xfire or GTX 770/780/970 in SLI would be good enough to max for 75Hz. For around 750 pounds I'd get the R9 295X2 instead for 530 pounds: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-video-card-r9295x8qfa. On the rift I'd recommend that you try it first, I have the SDK 2, and I was pretty underwhelmed when it came to actual gaming.

If I were to invest 750 to a pc right now, would it be as good as my pc is at this moment? That is equal to about 530 pounds.

Pretty much the only thing I would consider 'weak' on your pc is the processor and only one 7950. CPU wise I just don't think it's a show stopper at this point. you could get an i5 4690 which will perform a bit better gaming wise and weaker for multi-threaded tasks along with an R9 290 and have a 'better' computer, but really in my opinion you're better off focusing on a GPU upgrade OR waiting until you have more cash or pounds on hand. If money is such a big issue, I'd leave the rift for like next year or something which would free up another $300+ and give you more options for upgrading your rig.

Yeah that is one option I have been thinking of, but I realized that I shouldnt buy one, atleast yet, since there is no need, but when Oculus comes out, I will need some serious power in my pc :D

The answers have been great so far and have given lots of food for thought, but I would like to get a answer about weather or not I should sell my pc now for around 750€ or Is that too little and I should just upgrade.

I know I can sell it, I even have a buyer, but is it worth it for me?

There is no right answer to that mate. It is a good PC after all with quality components and all that. Graphics power always matters more than CPU power. You've got a good CPU, improve that graphics card and you're done. No need to sell it unless you want to focus on a future proof Intel build. You'll have to spend around 1000 euros atleast to signficiantly improve over that build.

Simply put, you can sell your PC now it has some sort of value, while you can keep it and still get good performance with your current build. A major improvement would be somewhere an i5-4690k or even an i7-4790k with a GTX 970.

Alright, so I wouldn´t be making a wrong choice by selling my pc now and buying a entirely new computer in a couple of years. Thanks!

Wow that is quite alot, I had no idea, thank you for the info :) I need to take that into account when it´s coming out, also I would imagine it will take even more RAM when the "persistent universe" hits live.

Also this is completely unrelated to the thread, but I would advice you to make your picture that you have there maybe 3/5ths the size of what it is now, it completely blocks the reply button atleast on my oneplus one, altough on computer It doesn´t seem to be a problem.

I do not have alpha access to the game, (I will have access when the game is out, which according to the people behind star citizen, should be slightly before or after 2016.) so I haven´t been able to test it.
