Hi.
I just got my new SSD, and I cant figure out how to get my os transferred. I only want my OS and a couple of games on the SSD, and use the HDD for the rest.
So my problem is: how do I transfer my os? I do not have a istallation cd.

Sincerely

Use a cloning program and do selective cloning from the HDD to the SSD. Once this is done, everything will work perfectly as long as you do not change the motherboard.

I use Apricorn's EZ Gig IV, but this requires their hardware - Drivewire ($35).

There are other free cloning programs too.

Backup before you do anything. Backup to an external drive.

For cloning (making an exact copy of the entire disk) you need to connect the hard disk to your present computer OR to a different computer and then use a cloning software. There are a few good free cloning software that you can download and run.

There is Acronis (free download from WD's website)

Clonezilla: http://clonezilla.org/

Apricorn (this is what I use): http://www.apricorn.com/products/software/ezgig.html

EaseUS: http://www.easeus.com/backup-software/ (I have used this) - look for the clone option.

After you clone the hard disk, use the newly cloned hard disk in place of the old hard disk.

Make a backup of the new setup.

Please read the original post.

You cannot transfer the OS with limiting what goes with it. You can only clone the drive which will include everything on you current drive and moves it to the new drive. If you do not want everything, as you already have it, to move over or you have to go to a smaller SSD than the amount of space taken on your HDD, then you should not/cannot clone the drive. You will have to obtain a separate copy of the OS to install otherwise.

Just in case I confused you. If you are using a 500GB HDD and are using 250GB already, you cannot clone the drive to a SSD that is 250GB or less. The reason being is that cloning does not allow for exclusion of files and the SSD has to have enough space to create a partition that stores the OS by itself for recovery and usage.

I use eassus too. It makes a perfect copy. If your hard drives are not the same size you will have to buy the master edition that will allow you to extend the original partition to the new partitions size. If your ssd is smaller make sure you can transfer without loss of data.

Backup the entire drive - OS, programs, data files; everything. Windows has a good backup program; found in Control Panel, Backup & Restore.

Apricorn's EZ Gig IV has a selective cloning feature, which enables you to clone the OS and selected programs from a larger HDD over to a smaller SSD. Download the free software and get familiar with the options. You will need Drivewire.

I think the easiest way would be to download your OS to a usb stick or burn it to a CD yourself. Maybe you have a friend or something you can borrow the OS CD from instead? If it is Windows, it doesn't matter it's not the same version (Home premium etc.). You choose this during installation. It just has to be the right OS(Windows vista/7/8). Then format the HDD-drive, and do a clean install of windows on you'r SSD.
Note: Only do this if you have the product key!
