Ive never done this before and i ran intels stress test for a few seconds and the temperature would fluctuate from 60- mid90s back and forth. The fan would rev up then slow down up and down up and down. I want to make sure my new pc is running optimally. Does anyone have suggestions?

Solution

Yes. Excellent. I should have mentioned that about the new versions right at the start. Soon as I realized you had a Haswell.

90C is extremely high. You can use Prime95 or at least run OCCT for an hour and half. If the system crashes then it's not stable. But you should look into a better heatsink, see if your current one is sitting properly because 90C is extremely high.

CM Hyper 212 is a good heatsink, you might just have placed improperly or maybe used too much or too little thermal paste.

I originally installed the one that came w the i7 until the cm 212 came today. So i could install windows etc... Would that cause any probs? When I took it off i used a coffee filter and cleaned old paste off, then put a half a pea sized drop of arctic silver and spread it out w another filter so it was flat and smooth

Sounds like the TIM application might be also be a possible culprit. Not exactly the way you're suppose to do it. Download the instructions:
http://www.arcticsilver.com/intel_application_method.html#

You should use a cleaner to remove the old stuff from both surfaces. Then use the vertical line method on Intel 4th gen CPUs.
Too much AS5 will retard cooling. And any that gets on the board, socket, pins etc. can cause problems. AS5 is very electrically conductive. That's why I switched to MX-4.

I'm going to reapply it now. I didn't use a cleaner 1st time and have iso 90% alcohol so I'll clean both then do line method the reset it. I did move it around pretty much 1st time also as its in my case. I'll be more careful this time

reapplied it and same results. It runs games okay i dont know what the problem is. During the stress test I have it on standard and when it revs all the way up the screen flicks for a split second.

yea the intel burn test. i have speccy open next to it to watch temp. its at 34 deg idle but when i start it goes from 60 up to full fan speed (90 degrees in red) then back down to 60(in orange) at lowest fan speed

Okay so now im really confused. I loaded up metro last light redux which i guess is a very graphically demanding game. I have it on the highest possible settings and the fan isnt even kicking on its running it so well. Its at about 48% on cpu task manager chart and 38 deg C on speccy when i alt tab out wuickly to check it. Its running at a pretty stable 60 fps also.

Okay. Im not into overclocking or anything, yet. I just wanted a killer pc to play games on max settings. Thanks for the help. I looked it up and it seems others have/ had the same problem, even after getting a new replacement cpu.

Could I have missed a driver download for something? Would that effect it? It's just confusing as it runs games perfectly it's just the stress test that pushes the Temps up that high.

That shouldn't make any difference.
But if you are stress testing with the latest version of Prime95, that might be the problem. You should not go past ver. 26.6 with Haswells. Prime95 version 28.5 should not be used on 22 nanometer processors. Try the older version.

Sorry I don't even know what prime 95 is. Time to do more research

HA! IM running prime95 ver 26.6 and my temps around 75°C on 100% cpu load. So it must be something with Intel stress test because this looks much better.
