Looking for time sync server for private / closed network

Hi. I need to time sync 6 cctv recorders that are on a closed network with only one other PC on the network. Can you help?

The only stipulation is that all the recorders have the exact same time. This does not need to be the correct "real" time so does need to sync with internet NTP servers, GPS or radio clocks etc. I was planning to find some time-sync/ntp software to install on the PC and let the 6 recorders update/sync time this way. No software can be installed on the recorders, all they have in their settings is one field for address so IP address/ntp address only. There is no port setting either.

You say you don't have to have sync to 'real world' time, but I would recommend adding one of these TM1000A to your network. Then you DO have a legitimate NTP server and your timestamps can't be questioned. Without an independent source like this, your "master" time is easy to manipulate and has no credibility if called into question.

@ex_bubblehead, since the OP said this was a disconnected network, your NTP servers still don't have an authoritative master time since the internet NTP servers would not be available. Here is an article using a serial port GPS receiver to create a stratum 1 NTP server with no internet connectivity. I have used this method with a Garmin GPS-18x receiver. Laptop being used for realtime data collection with no network access.

The standalone server is a much easier, and possibly more legally defensible implementation.

The OP said he did not need to synchronize with Internet time. I think we have to do him the courtesy of believing him; no doubt the importance is knowing that the cameras are all working to the same time rather than that it is the exact time. A simple open-source solution is better, in this case, than a $300 proprietary one. I'd just run an NTP server on the one PC. The time on this can be manually checked every now and then.

Both ends of the spectrum have been presented. I only pointed out, that time stamps on cameras might only be useful if there is a source which can't be easily manipulated. Being able to change the time at-will on your free running NTP server to 6 days ago and having that date show up on a video isn't very convincing when the lawyers get involved. I could be way off base, but it could also be an area the OP did not think of ...
