Wanting to upgrade to an SSD but my current mobo is only Sata II which I have read to get the potential of a SSD you need III.

Would it still be worth it or am I better off leaving it alone until i can upgrade the board?

Solution
sata 2 will give you only 2x the best hard drive speeds in sequential operations. Sata 3 gives 3x.
But, the os does mostly small random reads and writes which are 50x faster with either sata 2 or 3.
Everything you do will feel so much quicker.
As to brands, the reality is that all modern ssd's perform about the same.
My preference is Intel 730 or Samsung 840/850.
They both make their own nand chips so they can do a better job of validation.
My preference is Samsung. I like their free ssd migration utility.
They also offer a ssd cache software option called "rapid mode"
As to pro or evo, the pro will offer longer endurance. Your pro ssd is likely to last 15 years vs. 10 for the evo. A moot point, I think.

An SSD even with SATA II interconnect will still be 10X faster than a mechanical hard drive. You should check the BIOS of your motherboard (or the manual) and determine if AHCI is supported. It will be an option for your SATA ports. If your SATA ports are set to IDE, you will need to convert your windows installation to support AHCI. There are lots of tutorials on how to do that. AHCI is a necessary part of your SSD supporting the TRIM command.

Don't hesitate the SSD will be miles better even on sata 2.

Sata 2 will top out at 350ish mBps, still a big improvement over the 120 you will get with a hard drive.
Now that is sequential read where you are reading say a movie where you have one large file where all the data is in one chunk, not fragments all over the place.
The real performance increase is the near instant seek time, the SSD drive can access 100files spread all over the place 30-50x faster then a hard drive can, this is why booting or opening a program is night and day faster with an SSD.

AHCI is supported, thank you guys for the quick answers. I've been tossing the idea around but didn't want to pull the trigger if it wasn't worth it.

Now the big question, which one to go with? I do not know much about the different ones but the ones I've seen talked about the most are the crucial bx and the samsung evo. They are relatively the same price wise, thoughts?

SATA II or SATA III makes no difference or nearly so. An SSD will make huge difference, get it now.

You can go to the front page of Tom's Hardware and look for the Best SSDs for the Money article. In my personal opinion, any SSD is leagues ahead of any hard drive.
