Hi,

I'm looking at doing the following build:

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/nVJdwP

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($324.98 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG R1 Ultimate 76.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus MAXIMUS VII HERO ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($209.99 @ Micro Center)
Memory: G.Skill Sniper Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory ($130.95 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($114.95 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($124.89 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card ($329.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro ATX Full Tower Case ($99.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: XFX XTR 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($91.99 @ NCIX US)
Optical Drive: Asus BW-12B1ST/BLK/G/AS Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer ($45.98 @ Newegg)
Wireless Network Adapter: Asus PCE-AC68 802.11a/b/g/n/ac PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter ($94.49 @ OutletPC)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF140 Quiet Edition 67.8 CFM 140mm Fan ($16.77 @ OutletPC)
Total: $1664.96

My question is whether or not you think the RAM modules will fit under the Cryorig CPU cooler or if they are too tall. I have seen modules that are taller than the G.Skill Snipers, like the G.Skill Trident X and I figured its safer to go with the Snipers. But if you think there is plenty of room, is there a higher quality or better RAM that I should upgrade to? I'd like to go 2400MHz because there seems to be seriously diminishing returns at any higher frequencies.

Thanks,
RS

If still thinking 2400 sticks, the Ares are 2400/11 which is about the norm for the lower profile sets, they have a lifetime warranty and as are all Gskill sets very high quality. Kingston has the Savage line (nice looking red heat sinks) in 2400/11 and believe are 33mm tall so they would fit, AMD has their Gamer series in 2400/11 (Black) that would also fit

So I just popped out the side of my case to do a reality check. The R1 Ultimate will fit them under, but you would need to shift the front fan up. I am not entirely certain by how much you can shift it though, but it should fit.

P.S A second check, you might be able to get a little problem there which is about 2mm. I think you would need a shorter RAM kit.

In the picture below we have measured the gap whilst having the cooling fan as high up as it can possible go. This leaves a total height of just under 4cm, so it’s probably a better idea to stick with low-profile solutions.

Ok it looks like I will need to go with a different kind based on this: http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-2400c11d-16gsr

So do you know any "low profile" RAM that I can find in 2x8 preferably 2400MHz? most of the other kinds I've looked at so far are even taller than the Sniper.

Thanks,
RS

The motherboard as long as it supports the data rate, plays very little into how DRAM performs overall, the MC (memory controller) of the CPU is more the key factor. I know the Hero can easily handle 3000 + with a good CPU, and the 4790K CPUs, even some of the weaker ones I've seen can handle 2400 with ease

When I changed the old P67 Pro3 for Z77 Extreme6 with the same 2700k and the same 4x4 GeiL 1333 9 RAM - my RAM performance increased by a steady 5-7% across the board. Even if I swapped for 1600 9 RAM and kept the P67 - the performance would have been lower.

On the contrary, motherboards do have an impact on RAM performance. All of those traces and connection from the RAM to the CPU have to go through somewhere, right? Impure or better said "not so pure" copper or other tiny little details do have certain % of impact. Given the fact that also, RAM scaling is minuscule in a lot of cases.

Subtle differences, but they are there. Just as big as RAM kits tiers.

P67 to Z77 is completely changing from one chipset and going up two newer chipsets, you're looking at advances in the chipsets, which isn't an issue here, the design and implementation of DRAM handling changed in your instance, just as it has improved some from Z87 to Z97 - but when just looking at the Z97 mobos, they can basically all handle the same DRAM, the CPU (actually the MC) [lays in more, the K models can handle higher DRAM like the 2400 sticks where the non-K can't regardless if the mobo can

This is assuming you take the mobo as is when you get it and do nothing else, going from that, then the Hero has few equals either forom out of the box and especially if you want to fine tune on your own. Asus has had the best handle on the Z87 and now the Z97 chipsets and setting the mobo components to blend all together. Regardless overall you will see much better performance drom a good set of 2400 and a good set of 1600, depending on what you do with the system, for simply gaming not so much, but again when your get good 2400 sticks (say the Tridents 2400/10 in 2x4GB for $75 compared to a near same price for 1600 DRAM, it's a no-brainer to get and use the higher bandwidth of the 2400

Ok so from what little research I've done so far it looks like the G.Skill Ares are about the lowest out there. Is there any "higher quality" low profile RAM that I am missing somewhere? (higher quality meaning better warranty, build quality, latency/timing etc.)

Thanks,
RS
