GA-MA790XT-UD4P athlon x4 620 memory

so i have an older system, GA-MA790XT-UD4P motherboard running an athlon ii x4 620 and i wanted to upgrade the memory to 2x4gb instead of 2x2gb.

i picked a http://www.kingston.com/datasheets/HX316C9SRK2_8.pdf but i can't seem to get it to work on dual channel, only single. i can run it from 800mhz to 1600mhz but never in dual channel. i get the long beeps of memory error trying to post whenever i try it in dual mode (slots 12 or 34). single module at a time works in any of the slots so i know the modules are ok.

i upgraded to the latest bios for the motherboard, brand new psu, nothing overheats.

I can't speak to that particular board. But my Asus P5NE-SLI (LGA 775) from that same era was VERY finicky about memory. But that was only when all 4 slots were populated. As far as the CPU, I've built with lots of Athlon IIs and Phenom IIs over the years and never had any issue with memory. They ran any DDR3 I threw at them.

Just out of curiosity, what happens when you mix memory and populate all 4 slots?

Do you have 2 of those sticks and in the correct slots? They should be in the first 2 slots closest to the CPU if using only 2 sticks.

A single stick or 2 sticks in the wrong slots will only run in single channel mode.

See page 16 of your MB manual.
 
yep, that's what i was hoping, and yes, i tried the closest slots to the cpu. doesn't post. i get just single beeps like mem failure. works fine if i leave them like now in single channel and even defaults to 1333 in bios (probably due to the cpu)

i tried all speeds from 800 to 1600, whenever i try moving the one in slot 3 to 2 (to get dual channel instead of single) it 's beep time. the slot works with one module in it, so can't be the slot, the modules are good too - each works in single channel or single module.

Since you say you are getting the beep code for memory error, try each stick individually in the first correct slot and run memtest for at least one full pass. Several passes for more accurate results. Then remove and repeat with the other stick. If any errors at all show up, the stick is bad.
This will take some time.

Once you verify the sticks are indeed good, you can then assume that older board is having trouble with dual channel mode using that make/timing/etc memory.
Btw, I presume your CPU is an Athlon II x4 620, not an Athlon X4 620. I don't think they made the latter

What beep code are you getting?

i'll recheck the power connectors on the motherboard when i get the chance maybe when the mb bent while i plugged the ram the connectors moved or smth... if not i'll just run them in single channel and call it a day and just hope and pray i don't run into the same issues when i upgrade i planned to use this ram on my new pc too.

Hopefully you didn't break a solder trace on the MB when forcing the RAM in. I like to install the CPU/cooler/RAM while the board is on my bench just for that reason. And when inserting the sticks in the DIMM slots, use a finger to flip the locking levers up into the notches. That will help seat the RAM w/o having to use as much pressure.
