I have a machine with a second gen Intel Core i3 chip in it, and I'm wondering if this is considered obsolete or still up to date or something. It's a Core i3 3240 in case anyone is wondering. Thanks for your replies!
Actually, the i3-3240 is a 3rd gen (Ivy Bridge) core processor. It's only obsolete in as much as the 1155 socket is no longer produced in new boards. Intel has moved on to the 1150 socket now. But it is far from obsolete in practical terms.

No it's not obsolete at all. It's still a decent all around cpu. Even though it's platform is dead, it still uses all of the most current components like sata ports, DDR3 RAM, etc...
