Keeping OS on old SSD drive, and moving program files to a bigger SSD drive.

I currently have a Samsung 120GB SSD drive that is almost full. I just purchased a Samsung EVO 250GB SSD drive. I'm planning on moving all the program files to the 250GB SSD, and leaving the 120GB SSD as the stand alone OS drive. Is there a simple way of just moving the program files to the 250GB SSD without touching the OS on the 120GB SSD?

I also have a one internal and one external HDD that I save all my file too.

I'm trying to avoid re-installing all the programs to the new SSD, as suggested in other blog threads.

Thank you any information you can provide.

You can just try moving the program folder for each program. Don't move the "Program files" folder though. Just shortcut would be broken and you would have to make new ones or edit the ones to point where it is at now. Some programs though may not like being moved like though and you may have to reinstall.

Now that you have a larger-capacity SSD is there any reason you do not want to move, i.e., clone, the entire contents (OS + program/data files) of your 120 GB SSD over to the 250 GB SSD? Then find some other use for the 120 GB SSD. Isn't that a viable option?

Thanks for the reply guys.

I'll that a try drtweak. I hope majority of the programs transfer over without any problems.

ArtPgo - I already have two other drives, one 1 TB internal HDD drive and a 500 GB HDD external drive, that I use to save my files. So I really don't have any other options to use the 120 GB SSD.

Frankly I still don't quite understand why you wouldn't opt to have your new larger-capacity SSD contain both your OS and all your program files (as well as possibly other data) as long as that SSD has the capacity to contain such. What could possibly be the downside to that?

Whether or not you currently have a use for the older 120 GB SSD seems to me irrelevant at this time in terms of organizing your present system.

Since you currently have additional disks that can serve as backup media for the 250 GB SSD there doesn't appear to be a problem in that area. And since the 120 GB SSD already contains a viable copy of your current OS + the program files you still would have at hand a current backup of your system (OS + program files).

Anyway it would be a relatively simple matter to clone the contents of your 120 GB SSD to the 250 GB one. I'm assuming, of course, that you're perfectly satisfied with the operation of the 120 GB SSD in that it boots & functions without any problems whatsoever.

It just seems to me that you should take full advantage of a larger-capacity SSD as long as you can contain the OS and your program files on that device.

Ok the only thing you can move is data example: pictures, music and videos. Installed applications will have to be re-installed. Installed apps make registry entries and if you move from say drive C to drive E the applications won't run. Applications don't really occupy much space compared to pictures and videos. So if you have drives where your data and files are stored then what has filled your SSD? 120 GB is way more then an OS needs.
