PCIe x16 bad, any reason x1 would be?

First, I may have some potential, but am NOT fully computer savy, so keep it simple, please.
Inspiron 531 came with G-Force 8300 GS in the only PCIe x16 slot. Worked well for number of years. Other day computer would not boot not even Dell splash screen. Something made me think it was graphics card. Plugged monitor into on board VGA. It was slow, but booted. Took out GeForce, and booted normally. Put card in another computer and it worked fine. Checked BIOS and PCI settings as should be.
Anyway, I miss my dual monitors.
Was wonering IF that PCIe x16 is no good, what is the likely hood that the PCIe x1 slot is still OK? Or instead of buying a PCIe x1 card, just get a PCI card?

Solution
If you have a PCIe x1 peripheral such as a wifi adapter you should just try it. It's possible that either there's a fault with the connector, or that there's a fault with the controller (although controller faults tend to get picked up by windows fairly often).

It's possible that the video card worked it's way out of the socket over time and was not making a solid connection. Try putting it back in and seeing what happens, make sure you don't over-torque the screw that holds the card in because this can cause connectivity issues.

Thank you AdviserKulikov !!! Such a freaking simple test, I shoulda thought of it <grin>. Another computer had a USB 3 PCIe x1 card in it. And obviously I couldn't find the driver nor any name on the card (free with WD MyBook) but numbers on card provided correct search and driver install. The PCIe x1 slot works. Again, thank you for the simple test.

Quixit, thank you for your thought. That was my first hope as when I opened the case a LOT of dust had collected around the card and the slot. I removed, dusted, reset and still it did not work. Tried twice, no success. Funny thing is that the card's fan works. Oh well, I wanted a similar card in another computer so I'll just get a PCIe x1 card for the 531

Again, thank you for the very quick responses.

Vexillarius,
Since yesterday, I'll have to revise and explain.
Yes, I put the graphics card in another machine, one with Linux Mint 17.1. It appeared to work with a VGA monitor, but when I plugged a TV into the DVI output, the picture was "scrambled". Downloaded the appropriate driver and the machine would not boot. Put the card into another machine with Win 7 and a VGA monitor, and that machine would not boot.
I'm beginning to think it IS the card. I wish I had another x16 card to throw in that Inspiron 531
Today, I will put my USB 3 PCIe x1 card in the 531 x16 slot and see what happens.
