ram upgrade options

i have a new-to-me Dell E6420 which is running Win7x64Pro and came with a single 4G stick (has 2 slots). it's a 1333/9/1.5 stick of Kingston. i'm looking at my options for moar-rammage!

option 1 - add 4G of same spec 1333/9/1.5
option 2 - add 8G of same spec 1333/9/1.5
option 3 - swap for 2x4G of 1600/9/1.35
option 4 through option 735 - every other combination of 4G and 8G sticks, all freq, all latency, either voltage

this laptop is MAINLY used for work / office apps and a java-based trading platform. eventually i'll swap over the WD Black that's in there for an SSD. but for now i'm thinking about the ram options.

what's your thoughts? should i just throw in whatever 8G is cheapest even if the specs are different and let the system auto-set the most appropriate figures?

I'd just throw in another matching 4GB stick. Do you think you'd ever need more than 8GB?

You don't need cutting edge RAM for a work laptop. You'll see little, real-world performance increase with 1600MHz versus 1333MHz RAM.

does the Win7 sleep mode use up noticeably more ram than the same setups on a desktop that doesn't use sleep mode? i gather that sleeping shoves stuff into ram, so i'd assume it would pack in more than what's in ram during normal use.

During regular usage, no, it won't use more RAM. Sleep mode does use RAM, but it adjusts for each amount of RAM it detects.

A laptop with 4GB of RAM can still enter sleep mode, like a laptop with 16GB of RAM can. It just won't be quite as fast at doing it.

Honestly, if you can, avoid sleep mode. It makes the system slow and unresponsive after a while. If you really want to use it, just be sure you reboot it daily to keep the RAM running well.

reboot daily? seriously? that would seem to defeat the purpose of the sleep mode (for the most part). my home and office machines are always on, so i really only reboot when updates tell me that i have to.

maybe i'll just add 4G of the same-spec ram, or 8G if there's a spectacular sale in the coming weeks.

thx!
