On PC part picker, it says "Some Intel Z87 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Haswell Refresh CPUs." At the expense of sounding like a total n00b, what does this mean, and will this be a problem? This is my first build, so I would appreciate any and all help and opinions about what this means. In case it is relevant, this is the full build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/nY4LK8

Solution
You're better off just getting a z97 board to go with the haswell refresh CPU's. The BIOS is the the built in software in the motherboard placed in ROM. What you need to know is that the z87 boards have a BIOS that is meant to work with haswell CPU's (4670k,4770k, etc). If you want to use the new haswell refresh CPU's you will need to update the BIOS to the most recent version or get a z97 board which already has the most recent BIOS. Asus has a nice feature where you can update the BIOS of the z87 boards to the most recent ones with a USB.

Now you could buy the z87 board and update the BIOS through the Asus website or you can just buy a z97 board and be done with it.
