Which is better for gaming?

They are about equal hardware specs, however, AMD does not have as good driver support/optimization as Nvidia.

For gaming go with Nvidia, for workstation use AMD is probably better. (Mainly because Quadros are super pricey)

I would say it depends on monitor size, for 1440p and under go with the 970. For 4k+ go with the 290x.

Even then it's slightly debatable unless you upgrade to the 8GB version of a 290X.

You don't have to drop many settings very far before the 970 performs at 4k.

And in all actuality if your going for 4k I would recommend 970 SLI, 980 SLI, 295x2... something along those lines just to have decent performance. More then likely the poster is going to be better off with the 970.

When this article was written, the 290X was quiet a bit more expensive, but most of it still applies to your question.

My opinion is currently for Nvidia. AMD is lagging behind a bit.
