I´m planning on upgrading my PC/motherboard, and and adding another GPU for SLI.
I've mainly decided on the Asus Z97-A board (Or Asus Z97-pro... just a bit too pricey).

I'd also like to upgrade to an M.2 ssd. (for future proof/speed/form factor, X99 etc.) And this is where i run into the problem:

My 1150-socket Xeon CPU supports 16 PCI lanes, which will all be used on the SLI GPU's (8X8). This means that i cant/shouldn´t run the M.2 trough PCI-E(?) with 10Gbit/s.

But on the Z97-PRO motherboard, the M.2 type can be switched from PCI-E to Sata 6 Gbit/s.
My question is, is this feature also available on the Z97-A motherboard?

Thanks!

Solution

Not really. The CPU offers 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes intended for graphics cards. But the chipset offers another 8 PCIe 2.0 lanes for other uses, such as an M.2 PCIe drive.

Okay, thanks!

So, just to make sure: I can take any of these motherboards (Asus Z97-A, Pro, Pro Gamer, Maximus Ranger), and hook up two GPU´s and an M.2 SSD (Plextor M6e etc.) in the M.2 Slot? With no negative impact on performance?

If so, cool :)
