Hello everyone! I am working on an old Dell PowerEdge SC420 Server which I am setting up as a regular desktop. This originally comes with a RG156 X3468 Motherboard, Pentium 4 Prescott 520 2.8GHz, 800FSB, 2MB, Bios A02 version, LGA775 socket, PC2-3200E 512MB memory ram, and Win SBS STD 2003 operating system. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate. I also changed the memory ram to 1GB but using the PC2-3200U memory ram type. The problem is that no matter what type of memory ram I use, I CPU fan is too loud now. The heatsink is very hot, specially where it reaches the CPU. I trying changing the heatsink compound, but nothing changed. I also cleaned the fan and the computer inside. I checked for bad capacitors, but they are all okay. I do not really know why the CPU is so hot that is making the CPU heatsink fan work so loud. It crossed my mind that it could be because of the Windows version. I did not use this computer with the original Win SBS STD 2003 operating system so I would not know for sure. I read the when the Bios is upgraded, the motherboard supports other CPUs. I am thinking that upgrading the CPU could fix the problem. Tell me what you think guys!

I understand. Would upgrading the CPU and using another heatsink/fan setup make any difference???

Upgrading the CPU = changing the motherboard, and RAM. And maybe the drives (IDE vs SATA).
Then you might need a new power supply, other than that decade old thing.

Hey, look...you just built a whole new PC !

The P4's, either server or desktop, were notoriously hot and power hungry. I had a couple, and it was like sitting next to a running jet aircraft.

What are you looking to do with this thing?

LOL.. You are right about the running jet aircraft comparison! LOL.. I am entertaining myself fixing this computer for an old man who wants it to what YouTube videos and download old music. This motherboard comes with SATA interface as well as IDE.

Whatever you do with this server, with this CPU, it is going to be loud. No one cares how loud servers are since they don't belong to the living room, or to office cubicle.

You might try to replace the CPU (and PSU) fan with something marketed as "quite, extrasilent, designed for baby cribs", but don't expect miracles.

Bestbuy or Walmart. $250
Faster, quieter, more stable. Done.

The computer is quite at first starting up. Then it changes to loud when running for 5 minutes or so. I am going to try changing the CPU fan. Also, the heat sink is like a tower. The thing is that this heatsink is only getting extremely hot at lower section. Maybe the heatsink is not dissipating the heat properly.

It's quiet at first, because it's not doing anything yet.
It was never designed to be quiet, because for a 'server', quiet does not matter.

Reaccion,

First, This Poweredge SC420 has an Intel E7221 chipset:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/server-chipsets/server-chipset-e7221.html

> which supports 64-bit Prescott CPU's so the fastest CPU for that system would be a P4 672 64-bit, single core /hyperthreading @ 3.8Ghz.

As for the heat and noise problems, that is the bain of every server- they have to have a huge air flow and they're running all the time. And which is why they're kept in a separate room at businesses.

I was given a Poweredge 2600 from a closing office and brought it home to try and learn more about servers. The price was that I had to extract the company files and wipe the drives. This server had had it's own room at the office and it was so noisy that I moved it into the bathroom and closed the door with the monitor and keyboard keyboard cables running under the door. The file extraction- from 146 and 76GB 15K SAS drives took 15 hours and it felt like living next to an airport.

Servers are impossibly noisy to be inside an office space.

You may have gotten this server for very little, but my suggestion is to put it on Craiglist as suitable for a small business- you know some small store or office can use these- and take the proceeds to buy a regular desktop or workstation- workstation is better as these will be old systems and workstations like Dell Precsions are built to near server standards of reliability. If you're on a tight budget, you might look at a Dimension E520, Optiplex 780 or 960, or best of all: Precision T3500 if the budget can be $300 or so. These can use 3GHz quad cores, and the T3500 uses DDR3 RAM.

Along with the Poweredge, I was given an E520 :There are a lot of amazingly cheap Precision T3400's, but these us DDR2 RAM which is very hot and actually cost more than DDR3.

Dell Dimension E520 (2006)( Original): Pentium D 830 dual core @3.0GHz > 2GB DDR2 667 > GeForce 7300LE > 2X Dell 19" LCD > Windows XP Professional 32-bit
[Passmark system rating = 384, CPU = 613 / 2D= 248 / 3D=72 / Mem= 562 / Disk=521]

>and changed the 3.0 Pentium D to E6700, added and 7300LE graphics card to GT440- a total of about $80

Dell Dimension E520 (2006) (Revised): Core2 Duo E6700 dual core @2.66GHz > 4GB DDR2 667 > GeForce GT440 (1GB GDDR5) > 2X Dell 19" LCD > Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
[Passmark system rating = 1219, CPU = 2024 / 2D= 457 / 3D=978 / Mem= 828 / Disk=576]

I was also given a Precision 390:

Precision 390 (2006) Original: Core2 Duo 6300 dual-core @ 1.86GHz, 2GB DDR2 667 > Quadro FX550 > 2X WD 320GB . Windows XP Pro 32-bit
[ Passmark system rating =397, CPU = 587 / 2D= 248 / 3D=75 / Mem=585 / Disk = 552 ]

> and which became for about $125:

Dell Precision 390 (2006) Revised: Xeon X3230 quad-core @ 2.67GHz > 8 GB DDR2 ECC 667 > Firepro V4900 (1GB) > 2X WD 320GB >Linksys WMP600N WiFi > Dell 24" > 1920 X 1200 > Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
[ Passmark system rating = 1458, CPU = 3699 / 2D= 431 / 3D=1350 / Mem= 885 / Disk=552]

This system recently acquired a Quadro K600 and will soon have the PERC 6/i RAID controller and 146GB and 300GB SAS disks from an upgraded Precision T5500. Tthese systems are cheap to buy, the parts similarly are inexpensive, and with a little research and patient shopping the results are impressive for the cost..

I think you see the idea And, besides the great cost to performance advantages of one to three generations newer technology, all these systems are designed to run quietly enough to sit right on the desk.

Cheers,

BamibBoom

I get you point and you are 100% right. I am fixing this computer for someone who wants to use it to watch YouTube videos and download music online. He does not want to sell it or buy another one. He wants his personal aircraft not to be so loud. LOL

I actually swapped the CPU fan with a desktop one (3610KL-04W-B56 ). It is working under about the same temperature and the fan is super quite. I am going to put the computer under full load to see the computer behavior and I will report back.
