Hi, I really really hope you can help me, although I put this pc together, Im having problems upgarding it (I have very limited knowledge on this stuff and Im going to put it down to luck that the kit I ordered 6 years ago ... has worked up to now!). I have a P5Q3 motherboard on my PC and I recently decided to upgrade my ram from 4gb to 6gb (dual channel 2x8 gb). I checked compatibility on http://www.pc-specs.com/mobo/Asus/Asus_P5Q3/278/Compatible_RAM

and decided to go for http://www.pc-specs.com/ram/Corsair/Corsair_CMY16GX3M2A1600C9B_Vengeance_Pro_Series_16GB_(2x8GB)_DDR3_1600Mhz_CL9_XMP_Performance_Desktop_Memory_Kit_Blue/107

received it today, plugged it in, and nada ... the screen stays black, the fan keeps running (at high speed) but nothing ... have I picked the wrong RAM ?

My fear is that the voltage is improper. More than likely that RAM is set at 1.65 volts. I'm not 100% though. If you can get into the BIOS then you can check for certain, but I know on Asus' site, it only supports 1.5v RAM any speeds up to 1800 MHz. You might be able to downclock the RAM, but chances are your stability will be gone for 1600 speeds unless you're experienced in RAM tweaking.

My suggestion would be to get some 1600 RAM that is at 1.5v. Any brand RAM will work fine, just needs to be within those requirements.

pcpartpicker.com is a nice utility for finding parts. No need to register, unless you want to. Just click System Build, click Memory, then on the left column there should be a slew of choices. You can choose 2x 4gb...

You can choose 2x 4gb sticks or 4x2gb sticks or whatever selection you prefer. You can narrow your search based on specific voltages as well as speeds, being 1600 I assume as your choice. You can even go as far as to pick the color you may or may not want.

I would suggest the G.Skill Ares series or Crucial BallistX Sport series if you want the cheapest RAM you can find. Both are of comparable quality with the more expensive choices, and there are several choices within those series. If you want something a bit flashier the G.Skill Ripjaws Series has tons of options at 1.5 V.
