would a g3258 be better than a i3 330m in a laptop from 5 years ago. im attempting to build a budget build which will eventually get upgraded to a full gaming rig. all im attempting to do is run youtube and some basic programs that run well on the i3 until i get a decent graphics card and a better cpu to upgrade the pc.

you will be moving from 4 threads to 2 threads with the g3258. however, each single thread of the g3258 will do more work than a single thread from the older i3.

for basic use, the g3258 is plenty of processor but for gaming it is not ideal. not sure what kind of budget you are shooting for, but i'd try for an i3 now and onboard gpu over a dual core g3258 and an add on card now. for gaming the dual core is just on its way out and building for future gaming upgrades will leave you wanting a new cpu sooner rather than later with the pentium.

i mean honestly i know its a mobile processor and i figured it was better but would i find any issues while using chrome loading youtube vids i currently can open about 10 pages with no issues would the 3258 be able to handle this alright

i was told when i bought this laptop that it would handle the mmorpgs that i had played at the time back when i had no PC knowledge i ended up playing on the lowest settings but i thought that it would be a little better ive been doing some research and figured for a fact that a slightly older i3 could handle it im attempting to do a 600$ budget build no gpu then add one later when i save up the money i just think that if i go with the g3258 it will be fine for a few months unjtil i add something to the effect of a 4690k and a 970

+1 to the build, except for the motherboard since its $30 more than good b85 ones but doesn't offer anything over them.

As a side note, the pentium g3258 is a quite capable gaming cpu, even though it obviously can't perform as well as an I5, it will (on a mild overclock of 4.0-4.4ghz which is doable on the stock cooler) usually outperform I3's and fx 8350's.

yup! that's why i suggested a new i3 if possible over a pentium. it sounds to me like he has this old laptop and wonders if the pentium would be better than what he has now. i did not read it as he was thinking of buying a 5 yr old laptop but rather that he already has it and wants a new better system.

usually when folks speak of the pentium and no gpu, the budget is VERY low so i suggested he try for an i3. but clearly, with the higher budget than i was thinking, he can have so much more.

and i wish i knew why the pentium has this mythical performance attached to it. it has good single thread performance but there is way it will outperform an fx-8350 in a multi-threaded application as suggested above. that's just crazy talk. that cheap dual core is apparently the greatest cpu ever made the way folks talk it up. :??:
