I'm selling my current PC and dual 1080p monitors to fund a hackintosh build which I will be using for graphic design, video editing, cinema 4D, gaming, and movies. I currently have two 1080p asus monitors which I enjoy, but I highly dislike having a bezel in the middle of my work.
I've been looking at new monitors for a few days now and I just can't seem to find the right one. I'm not sure which resolution would be better, 1440p, 4k, or an ultrawide 2560x1440p display.
I would prefer something over 28", less than 5ms response time, a glossy finish, and 60Hz or greater. Looks is also a big deal for me, not to be picky, but I would prefer something with a more sleek, modern design with a nice finish like the stand on the Samsung U28D. I prefer glossy displays because they tend to have a more "vibrant" color.
These are the ones I'm currently looking at:
Samsung U28D

Phillips 288P6LJEB

Acer B286HK

Monoprice glossy UHD

AOC q2963Pm

I haven't decided on my graphics card yet, but it will either be a GTX 960 or 970. I'm thinking if I go 4k ill opt for the 970 and if I go 1440p I'll opt for the 960. My price range is below 600$, if anyone has any suggestions for 1440p, 4k, or ultrawide monitors in my price range that would be great. Oh, and sorry for the essay :D.

The 4k monitor is coming down in price, and would be an ideal choice for a high end monitor.

I would not recommend an ultrawide monitor for most users as the screen resolution is not standard, and programs are not designed to take advantage of it.

Of the monitors you list, the Acer is a good choice balancing cost against features.

Thanks for the reply, the more that i think about it the more it makes sense. Do you know of any decent 1440p monitors above 28in? The only 1440p monitors I can find are all 27in, or cost over 700$. Meanwhile I can multiple 4k monitors for around 500$. How would the 970 do with 4k gaming? Obviously it wouldn't be on ultra most likely more around medium, but according to this http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2014/09/19/nvidia-geforce-gtx-970-review/7 the 970 is clocking in at 31 fps, ultra preset and a 3840x2160 resolution.

1 970 would drive the monitors, but wouldn't be good for gaming. You'd be on low settings for more recent games. You'd need SLI or a 980 to push anything above low.

As far as your monitor choice, I have the gsync model of the acer you post. I couldn't be happier. And I believe it fits right in with your desire of a "sleek" design. The tilting/raising features are great. The only thing is that it really doesn't meet your glossy screen requirements. Looks great to me though.

One thing worth noting, it may be worth your time to invest in the gsync version (acer xb280hk). Reason being, if your gpu isn't outputting 60 fps, it helps the application look smooth regardless.

I've had that samsung monitor you linked as well. I ended up selling it though. The color/image quality was better on the samsung vs the asus, but I ended up selling it because I was having stuttering issues with SLI. The gsync monitor fixed that.

Also, even though the picture quality was great, the stand quality is hoorrriibbbllleee. No tilt feature, no raising, and you get 1 joystick-like button to turn it off, adjust settings, etc. It was a nightmare. Definitely not what you are looking for.

I checked on that Gsync acer you mentioned and my one problem is that its a bit too much out of my price range. I did find that the monoprice is about what I'm looking for, except I saw that CNET did a first look on a different model of it and it has this really neat silver finish. Know where I could find it? http://www.cnet.com/products/monoprice-28-inch-4k-gaming-monitor/

And people keep saying that you need SLI cards to run games at 4k, yet I keep seeing benchmarks of the 970 running some pretty demanding games on ultra settings and 4k and getting roughly 30fps. Here's the benchmark for Bioshock infinite: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2014/09/19/nvidia-geforce-gtx-970-review/7

I have not owned a 970 so I can't really speak to it well. I'd imagine that whatever a 980 could do I'd subtract a little bit of expectation. With a 980, for me to get 60 fps in battlefield 4 I needed to use medium settings. So with a 970, that'd probably be a mix of medium and low.

It all depends on what you plan on playing, and what settings you want to play at. Once you figure that out, I could give you a better idea of what kind of GPU power you'd need.

I'm looking to play on medium settings or so, the only really new games that I play is battlefield 4, and crysis 3. Other than that I play indies, csgo, bf3, and games from the last 4 or 5 years. I wouldn't mind getting a 1440p monitor, except all the ones I can find are 27in which is just a little small for what I want to do. If you could find a 1440p monitor that's greater than 27in that's great, I'd buy it immediately.

I was looking at this earlier but it was listed as 4k at 30Hz, on amazon it lists it as 4k at 60Hz. Also, how is 7ms response time for gaming?
