is it possible to use 2 different ram size like 4gb and 8gb and with different frequency like 1333mhz and 1600 mhz

hi,
i bought a new HP laptop it has only 4 gb ddr3 ram i am planing to add a new 8 gb ram. can i use them at same type.will their be any problem.how can i check the ram size and frequency of the lap top.

No. Only a complete ram kit is guaranteed to work.

The next best thing would be sticks of identical ram - same make and model. They might work.

Next would be ram that is not the same make and model but speeds, timings, voltages are the same. They almost certainly will not work.

Different ram sticks will not work at all.

two different ram sizes will probably work, but there is no guarantee, different frequencies however will not work, you will either have to set the frequencies manually to 1600(if the slower memory can handle it) or leave everything at auto and the ram will operate at the lowest frequency which would be 1333, but after that i have to say it is not recommended to run two different memory sizes not to mention make(different sets may have problems working together) and you lose dual channel mode, the only thing you would gain is ram amount, no speedup perhaps even a slowdown in certain tasks, if the two sticks won't play nice with each other

I've got 2 sticks of RAM one 4GB and one 8GB, they both run at 1600MHz at the same timings are from different brands and they're in dual channel mode. Your motherboard should automatically set them to the lowest common frequency and you should be good to go. Overclocking the RAM on different models and makes is not suggested though.

i did this experiment yesterday, and it all worked:

laptop has 4G of 1333/9 1.5V (made in 2011 apparently), works fine obviously
added 4G of 1600/11 1.35V (same brand, different model, made in 2014), works fine with no manual adjustment

not sure what the BIOS ended up doing as far as timings, but i had 8G to play with. but it wasn't my ram, so i took the 1600/11 out and put it back into my friend's laptop, and i'm back to 4G of 1333/9 and waiting on great sales on more ram for myself.

Before I got identical sticks I ran:

2x4gb Corsair Vengeance 1333's
2x8gb FuryX(Kingston) 1866's

As a compromise I went into bios and changed them all to 1600 with the ram timings 9-10-9-27

Memtest 30 passes twice a day every day for seven days

Bump the voltage up by .10 so from 1.50 to 1.60

No instability no nuclear explosion emanating from my case or any other of the scaremongering scenario's people paint if you mix.

Just make sure you get the voltage & timings right and you'll be fine I had them like that for weeks while waiting to get another 2x8gb 1866 FuryX to match.
