In order to replace disks with more storage, could I simply swap one disk, wait for the RAID to rebuild on the new disk, and then duplicate the process for the other 3 disks? Would I then have non-allocated space available for use?

To grow an existing RAID volume. the RAID engine MUST support ONLINE expansion.
Check you RAID engine feature 1st. Most Mobo's raid engine wont offer such feature. Only enterprise RADI card offer ONLINE expansion.

But that is not an impossible task. You can create a 2nd volume on the non-allocation space, then append this volume to the existing one.
Now you have a ONE virtual volume
