Using GTX 580 without one heat sink?

So last night I took out my graphics card from the computer in order to dust my computer since this card is bigger than my face. So I opened up my PC and took my GTX 580 out of the case and noticed that one of the smaller heat sinks was not connected to the spot it should be, actually it was not connected to anything.

I have a aftermarket fan: accelero xtreme plus ii

My friend was telling me it's not big issue for the one heat sink that is no longer connected. I took his word on it and plugged my gpu back in. Everything works fine, however I have not monitored my temps on this card in a long time ever since I first got the new cooler. I opened up Tomb Raider and EVGA Precision X says that my temps of the card are up at 81C while playing the game. It does not go any higher than that though. DayZ the card runs at a solid 77C. I used EVGA to make the fan run a max by the time the card hits 75-80C.

I am just wondering if it is safe to continue using the card. I am suppose to get a GTX 970 in about a month or two, will my 580 last, should I be worried at all?

Thanks in Advance!

Any temperature monitor will show you your chip's temp so yeah you are fine for the next month..just when you take the card off reapply the thermal paste before you use it again or sell it

If im not wrong the piece you circled in the photo is a voltage regulator heat sink and it has nothing to do with the temperature of your gpu.
It would be a good idea to reattach that piece with some adhesive thermal paste if you can but its not a biggy. The most important thing is to properly reapply thermal paste on your gpu chip..

No I didn't, I only had this fan on my card for about a year. I am wondering if it's safe to use the card and game while missing that one heat sink.

So EVGA won't pick up if this is running hot or not. So I would have to assume that it's running hotter than it should? However, I just want to know if it's fine I use the card for the next month and not have issues.

Allways reapply thermal paste/pads when taking things apart. Its a 5 min job and could be days without working comp if you dont.
Also, put that heatsink back on while your at it. Probably the card will hold up for a month or more, but really, you never know when you find yourself needing just any card to get some computer booting and if you fiddle with cooling atall, do it right every time.

Alright, I will take your word. I took the gpu to a computer repair place and they said it isn't even worth putting it back on and I should just either get a new GPU or just leave it off and hope it does not die. They obviously have no idea what they are saying because they would of said to either take the cooler off and re-install the fan or something less retarded than that.

Thank you, just gonna pray I can game on it for the next month till my new one comes in. After that, I will most likely fix the issue.
