I'm trying to back up the files in my hard drive so that when I reinstall windows on my SSD, I can just move all the other stuff back onto my HDD. However, the backup program on windows won't detect my external hard drive, even though it is recognized by disk management. How can I make it detectable?

Can you please share what's the status of the external drive in Disk Management? Is it a new one or you have files on it already?
My guess is if it's a new one, it would appear as 'Unallocated' and 'Not Initialized' in Disk Management, so I suggest you take a look at these links that might help you get your external detectable.
