What's a good gaming laptop to save up for?

I already have a desktop rig, and it is my main machine, but I was wondering what would be a worthwhile laptop to save up for on the mobile front?

I have an older M14x Alienware which is nothing to cry about, and works completely fine, but I figure I might sell it later on.

I think it's a 2012 model ( traded a family member for a console I never used, thank God I didn't actually purchase it). Will I be okay for a year or two +? I of course cannot really afford something like a Falcon Northwest, but I would like something in the midrange. Just something that can run most games. What should I invest in?

There's a laptop called Msi Gt70 Dominator I think. If it's I'm your price range I really would recommend that laptop. One of the top laptops at it's price range. I have the Msi Gt80 pro sli. I can guarantee you'd love Msi if youpurchase. Especially coming from Alienware.

That is definitely something to look at, especially since I am considering saving up for a good while.

The processor is fine, but here is a link to what you should expect out of the GPU: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-870m/performance

Hey, I would highly recommend this one if you are considering saving up for something worthwhile. The processor 4710mq is definitely fine, quadcore 2.5ghz base clock and 3.5ghz turbo boost. The gpu however, is a total beast, you can think of gtx 970m a better version of the desktop 680 but slightly less than a 770.
I too had a desktop gaming setup but went for that laptop since I always had to switch places to live and carrying the desktop around was not an option. If you had the money, definitely go for a 4710mq+16gb ram+250gb SSD bundle, trust me, this thing is a beast for a mobile component. You are welcome to ask more info about it :)

As a college student, that is exactly my problem. I in no way want to get rid of my desktop rig, but I am so out and about that I never get time to use the thing. One question for this laptop, do you think it will be future proof at least for a year or two? That's the thing with the laptop I have now.

That's expensive, but I think I could save up for something like that. You have no idea with the alienware though, if I had a choice I would have never gone this route. Like I said though, it was a trade, basically a free one so :p

I mean, in my opinion, a semi-flagship card definitely can last for at least 2 years,, I can hardly imagine nvidia releasing the next gen mobile video cards in the next 7~8 months or so, even if they do, the 970m+4710mq definitely can stand on its own. On the other hand, since its a laptop and you are planning to get something mid ranged , you really can't dig much performance from it, unless you wanna spend that 2000+ or 2500+ for a 980m.

Additionally, I always try to make my decision as quickly as possible. You might come across situations where you wanna "wait for the next gen" but when the next gen comes out, you want something different. That being said, I recommend a laptop with at least a 880m or 970m (970m over 880m), normally a flagship/semi-flagship card would last you for 2 years before you really start to see drop in performance compared with other cards.
