Alienware X51 R2 upgrade from Geforce GTX 760 Ti OEM to EVGA Geforce GTX 970

Solution
Yep, should drop right in. Put it in, I would then reinstall latest drivers with a clean install, and let 'er rip. Your PC power supply should be more then up to the task; the 970 uses a little less power then your 760Ti.
Good choice for a card; I am looking at that one myself.

Wait, the EVGA Geforce GTX 970 requires a minimum PSU of 500w, and the X51 R2 has only 330w, so how is that "more than up to the task." As I understand the Geforce GTX 760 Ti OEM, the OEM version takes only 170w or so, much less than the non-OEM version, which is the only way Dell could pull this off. Are you sure about this reply???

Per Nvidia, the 760Ti OEM maxes out at 170W, and the recommended power supply is 500Watt. This is the card that Alienware put in his machine so they probably powered it properly.

Again, per Nvidia, the GTS 970 maxes out at 145watts and they still recommend a 500 watt system for the entire system; This is 25 watts less power, about 2 amps less current, then the 760Ti that came with his machine.

EVGA has not recommended any more power changes - still 145watts for this card with 500 watt PSU.

Alienware makes pretty good stuff, whatever has been powering his machine should do just fine with the new card.

Despite the 500w recommendation, the 970 draws no where near that amount. The 970 alone uses around 170w. So although its close, the 970 (at reference clock speeds) should do just fine on that power supply.
