So long story short my M5A97 LE r2.0 caught fire(f*ck me right?) and I'm replacing it with it's non-LE variant, the M5A97 r2.0.

Because they only have slight differences could I upgrade without doing a clean install?
I have important files I don't want to lose.

When changing to almost identical boards you should be fine as long as you install all the drivers for the new board. If you were going from say AMD to Intel or one AMD socket to another then a clean install would be necessary. As is I think you will be fine.

I would do a clean install. But to get the files off first i would use a linux live usb and get them off before a clean install. If that is not possable i would try to boot with safe mode or something. Windows does not like new mobos on old installs sometimes. Live linux is easy to do.
