Hello,

I have a major problem with my new build. I bought three new components a few days ago:

New components:
Mobo: Asrock Z97 Extreme4
Ram: HyperX Savage 8GB 1866MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM XMP
CPU: Intel Core i5 4590 3.30GH

Old components still in system:
ATI Radeon HD 7850
Corsair HX620

I put everything together in the case (I've built a few systems so I was quite careful and put it together well), and pressed the power button. It booted up perfectly, and I was really happy. It booted faster than normal... I got all the way to the desktop screen....

I was just starting to think of software when it switched off. No warning message, just off. I waited a short while, and pressed the power button again, but nothing happened. I could not turn it on.

I took everything apart again, checked the pins on the mobo - nothing bent, checked all the connections, nothing loose. So I though... darn, ok maybe something in the case is shorting it, or the PSU is finally caput after years of service. The LEDs on the board, I note, are flickering on and off like a broken neon light, flicker flicker, for quite a while after I unplug the machine too.

So I pulled it out, and breadboarded it. Minimal components this time, just the mobo, the CPU and 1 stick of ram (I only have one stick anyway FYI) with the PSU. It fired up, but after about 20 seconds it turned off. Meanwhile the dr debug display is going mental, ALL the numbers come up, although it finally settled on 4F when it turned off. It won't turn on after this, although the led's on the board are flickering again.

OK... so that leaves the PSU... I go and buy a new Corsair RM850. I put it all back together, still breadboared, and turn it on. Lo and behold it comes on, but only for about 25 seconds, dr debug goes mental again, this time settling on 55 or 54 or something (I think maybe it just ends on something by chance before turning off). Once again, can't turn it on at all.

I've done all the checks recommended in this forum's sticky threads.

What are your thoughts? The oddity is that:

a) it booted all the way to desktop
I'm no expert, but doesn't this sort of discount catastrophic CPU and RAM defects that would subsequently stop the computer booting at all?

b) new PSU does nothing
I was 90% sure it would be the PSU, but it seems not

My thoughts are that it's the motherboard.

FYI I've subsequently plugged in all my old components, and it's working fine. So it is either the mobo, the CPU or the ram that are faulty. I need to RMA one of them... which do I choose?

Thanks a bunch!

Do you think the computer would have even made it to the desktop the first time if it were a cpu or ram problem?

I've got to build a bit of an argument for the company I'm returning it to, as they are not famous for their returns policy/customer service.

I'd say no. It looks like a board component failing due to the heat. Or it could be a cold solder joint.

Have you tested with different RAM each slot?
