A CPU Query

I plan to get the Intel i7-4790k, now, a friend told me that because it hyperthreads, it'd be detrimental to the framerate of certain games. I really want to get the i7-4790k because it's a powerful CPU and I plan to do stuff as well as gaming with it. Especially as I don't want to overclock, I don't want to go for the i5-4690k, which is the one he pointed me to instead. What should I do?

You will be just fine with the Intel i7-4790K. Your friend is right that gaming has a sweet spot at the i5-4690K, but you'll lose nothing by using the i7. It costs more, can do more but the "more" isn't strictly needed by any current games. You won't lose anything, either, except maybe the $100 from your pocket that the i7 costs more than the i5.

As others have pointed out, your friend is a moron. And if you don't want to overclock don't buy a "K" designation Intel cpu.

The main reason i'm not overclocking is that I don't want to reduce its operational lifespan at all, also I don't really trust myself. To be honest the 4790k (being quad core @ 4ghz) will trounce anything I chuck at it, emulation in particular i'm worried about.

Cpu's have headroom. Highways have speed limits of 65 MPH. Yet your car can possibly double that speed. I have overclocked Macs, a IIfx and a Quadra 950 in particular that has been running overclocked since 1990 and 1991.

I'm no genius but I say if you're new to overclocking it might be safe not to fiddle with it for a while. And if you're not on a tight budget go for the i7 it's one of the best on the market no shenanigans. :)
Best of Luck!

Seeing as I want this build as future proofed as possible I thought having a CPU that powerful would be a good idea. I'm not on a tight budget at all, but the main problem is the saving up, i'm fantastically impatient so i've set up my shopping list so I won't go loopy. It won't be underpowered at all but i'll have to get it in bits, the machine (which I haven't thought up a name for but I think I have a good idea of what i'll call it) will be working by the end of June, albiet without a GPU (I don't mind using the integrated graphics for a couple of montsh whilst I save up for it).

I would if I could wait for that long, I don't think I can. I know that's a pain in the bum excuse but I'm physically unable to wait for anything. Also to be honest, this 4790k is a smashing CPU as it is, even if something new does come out I doubt i'll have any real need for it.

Trust me, i'm under extraordinary circumstances. I would wait if this laptop wasn't in its last legs as well. ALSO, nearly all of the parts i'm going to be buying soon are stuff like the case, the optical drive, the psu, the case fans, bits like that that aren't going to change by June. IF by some extraordinary circumstance, something better in every way than the 4790k pops up by June then i'll get it, no big deal.
