Hi

I have a HP Z400 Workstation that has 6 slots of RAM

It originally had 6X2GB of Micron pc3 10600 1.5V RAM

I modified it to 2X 8GB Micron pc3 10600 1.5V and 4X 2GB Micron pc3 10600 1.5V

I recently bought two new sticks of 8GB and 4GB of Micron pc3 10600 1.5V, with the idea of soon buying another 8GB and 4GB of Micron pc3 10600 1.5V to make a total of 3X8GB and 3x4GB for a total of 36GB

My RAM slots run 1 4 2 5 3 6 with the idea of it's split in to running 1-3 together and 4-6 together

so I was going to have all 8GB run together in slots 1-3 and for now 4GB with the 2X2GB

It would like like this 8Gb - 4GB - 8GB - 2GB - 8GB - 2GB

I noticed that when I put in the new 8GB, it was PC3 12800 1.35V I messed up, I'm not sure how I made this mistake, because I hunted it down looking for the specific details of pc3 10600 1.5 but obviously the mistake was made. The biggest mistake was I've been involved in so many DIYs lately that I let this RAM switch sit in it's package for a few months now, so I basically bought this, no chance for returns now.

All of the other 5 sticks are PC3 10600 1.5v

I put all the RAM in and the system seemed to make the changes on auto

right now the PC3 12800 1.5v 8GB stick is sitting in the 3rd slot in-between the 5th and 6th 2GB pc3 10600 1.5V

Should this be fine and my next step could be get the new 8GB and 4GB Micron pc3 10600 1.5V to finish my project of 3X8GB and 3X4GB = 36GB and maybe replace the 8GB Micron pc3 10600 1.5V then to have things running best optimally

OR

Should I for now go into BIOS and make changes to have the ram set at a different setting for now so the other 5 can work with the 12800 ram until I can get a replacement

OR

Is this terrible for my system and things are going to overheat and get real bad for that stick and the surrounding RAM, that for now I should lower my memory

It seems to be working fine right now, but I'm not sure if after a few hours of recording with plugins that system is going to jump in heat and cause real problems

I'm hoping I can go with plan A for a week or two, then get my other 4GB and 8GB and then get a replacement 8GB 10600 for the 8GB 12800, that the PC3 12800 can sit in there for a week or two, but my fear is after a few hours it will cause damage

MANY THANKS FOR ANY HELP

sorry, I meant I was going to buy 2x4Gb more for a total of 36GB and if I could wait until I bought 2X4GB more before I replaced the 8GB PC3 12800 or if the 8GB PC3 12800 1.35V had to go immediately because it would cause harm to my system and other RAM

I'm thinking everything is going to be ok, that the pc3-12800 is just going to clock slower with the other 5XPC3-10600, that I should see some sort of overheat or hardware damage. Kept a close eye on it while I recorded last night, everything was fine, no alarms going off with CPU or anything

Does that sound right? That it should be ok until I can find a replacement 8GB The way it's looking I'll be able to find my remaining 2X4GB PC3-10600 first

Ok well since nobody replied, I guess the 12800 RAM is good for now

I haven't seen any posts or threads here on the forum here warning of a mix of 12800 and 10600 to be disastrous

I just saw a deal on some new 4GB 10600 RAM, so I'm going to grab two more 4GB to conclude my plan of 36GB (3X8GB & 3X4GB) for my recording DAW computer before replacing the 1X8GB 12800 RAM that I have in there with the other 5 PC3-10600
