What/how many case fans should I buy?

I'm preparing my first build (which will be purchased in late April), and all I need now are some case fans. Which model and how many should be purchased? Everything else will most likely not be changed regardless of critique, but I will consider any tips as I'm semi-new to this.

Aren't stock fans usually of low quality? I'm looking to keep relatively quiet so I don't wake up family up during night sessions. Is there any major difference between silver compound? Arctic Silver has been the one constant product I've been aware of and simply assumed it would go beyond any other compound.
