Hi guys,

So I have a 500gb Seagate HDD, I think around 3-4yrs old already, and I do defragment once every 3-6 months or so. I'm not really sure if this might be the issue of my system being slow due to old age of my harddrive. I tried system disk check to see if there were any bad sectors, and there is around 3%.

I'm planning to get an SSD and migrate my OS there since i have a 1tb of backup HDD anyways, and i just can keep the 500gb that currently has issues as a drive for my other programs. Or should i scrap it already? Any thoughts about this guys?

Appreciate your help! :)

Well, it is going to depend if they are totally on that one hdd. If they are on that 1 hdd and you clone them to the ssd you will be fine. If they have little bits of files on other hdds they may work or not work right. If you can it would be best and cleanest to do a fresh install but cloning can work. It just depends how much time you can work on it or if you have programs that cannot be reinstalled. Maybe but i don't know you can clone some files. Im not sure if that is possible but it could save you some time on a fresh install.

If you can I wouldnt trust a drive with bad sectors. I would use dban on the hdd before you get it and use it as a backup drive. A good cheap hdd currently is a wd green 2tb from newegg. As for a ssd get a 850 evo or pro whatever you can afford both are really good ssds.

what is dban? also ill be getting a KINGSTON 120GB SSDNOW V300 since it's $20+ less than an 840 evo in my area for the same capacity

Dban is a disk wiping program it is very useful if you want to delete all data on a hdd including the blank spaces.

I see, thanks man! so first i should probably transfer important files to the 1tb then migrate the OS to SSD then do the Dban on the 500gb drive right? Also is the kingston a good buy compared to the 840 evo for less than $20+?

If the difference is like 20-30 bucks i would get the 840 or 850 evo both are extremely good and top of the line for ssds on the market. and yes you just move the files you want to save onto another drive and dban the 500gb. once you have dban you should disconnect all the hdds in the computer because dban goes crazy and deletes everything :)

Wew, that's kind of risky to do eh? :)
so ill clarify just to be sure. once i have done migrating my OS to SSD also transferring my important files to the 1tb, i will disconnect both the SSD and the 1tb from my mobo, then boot using the 500 gb then use Dban? after deleting everything, i reconnect my SSD and 1tb? does that sound right? sorry for such a noob question

No you should move all your files to your 1tb first then disconnect all the drives and then dban the 500gb. Once that is done install windows on the ssd. After windows is installed plug back in the other drives. Dban is not risky as long as you dont have your importand files on a drive plugged in :p

Well honestly i don't want to install windows and all my programs from scratch so i'd prefer migrating them first. will my process be okay or will i have issues?

Its going to depend if the cloning tool works. Somtimes cloning tools are a waist of time and the only option is to reinstall. If you want to migrate the os from one drive to the ssd you can but be warned it does not work 100% of the time.

So i should probably try and check if the cloning works on the SSD before doing Dban on the 500gb then right?

That reminds me that i should do some cleaning too :)
What if i have my games installed on the 1tb and i do reinstall my windows, will it affect the programs i have on the 1tb?
