I was supposed to upgrade back in december, but that project got held off because of a financial emergency, but now i got some money set aside, i'll like it if i could get advice on this build.

CPU : Core i7 5820K 6-core 3.3ghz
Cooler : Noctua NH-D15
MB : Asus X99-A
RAM : Crucial 4x8 GB DDR4 2133 mhz CL15
HDs : Already own a SSD and a few others
GPU : Asus GeForce GTX970 STRIX
PS : EVGA Supernova G2 750 watts
Case : Cooler Master HAF 932 (already owned)

I intend to overclock the processor to around 4ghz, am i well set to achieve this with this setup ?
I use After Effects the most and Premiere a lot too, but i'm really digging 3D and will probably use it more and more, I guess my priority would be good render times and a smooth experience in softwares.

Thank you !

That'd be a very good build for your purpose. The CPU's many cores and threads heavily helps with rendering videos and 3D objects.

The NH-D15 is a very solid choice. Noctua is just the best choice for CPU cooling on air. Ofcourse, watercooling brings ultimate performance, but for your purpose, I don't think it's as neccessary.

Other than that; Lovely build!
Good Luck!
Axel.

Thanks for the quick reply :) Is the motherboard a good choice for overclocking ? Some people have been suggesting the pro version instead for that purpose, but i don't see what advantage it would bring and i don't need the other extra features.

Also, is that power supply good enough ? Again some people suggested i get a 1000w one for overclocking but that seems really overkill to me.

There's no reason to go beyond that current motherboard. It's Asus, so, it won't let you down. Neither can I see any advantages.

I personally use that very PSU. Though, 1000W is way to overkill! 750W will probably work (That's the one I use) but, perhaps, by having a 850W, you will have a 'safe card on hand'.

As I said earler, that's a top-grade build. Perfect, to be honest!

I'm still unsure on the PSU, though. The PSU is of brilliant quality, but I'm not sure that 750W will do the deal. However, I'm unsure. But other than that (Again ^^); It's perfect and will work for your needs brilliantly!

Good Luck!

I wouldn't really recommend using the 970 in video editing. The segmented 512Mb of its 4Gb VRAM runs at a much slower speed compared to the rest, which could cause major stuttering issues when your software tries to push beyond 3.5GB.

Some users report of this even leading to crashes if you try to constantly push it to use all of its available VRAM.

EDIT: Never realized this thread was made in March. D'oh.
