I'm currently using the sapphire 7870 XT (w/boost) version, an old but trusty card that can output decent framerates. After a year of using, i'm looking to upgrade, but am unsure that at this time if that is the best offer.

Assuming I can sell my 7870xt at $100, should i purchase the 960 at $209? or is the upgrade just not worth it with 2015 being so young.

Also, should i then just go for a 280x?

Chasing PC upgrades is a vicious cycle of buying and a new whizzbang thing comes out the week after.
However, it does seem like a GPU upgrade for your system is in the list, so YES go for it.
The general rule for CPU power is roughly doubled every 2-3 yrs. Hence, the 7870 was released in 2012.
It is now 2015. So upgrading to the 960 is VERY worthwhile, with major improvements over the 7870.

Maybe you could consider SLI graphics pairing up another 7870, you would get more performance than
one 960 card, and its probs cheaper.
