Hey
As the title suggests, I've got problems with my USB flash drives on windows 8.1. When i plug them in I get nothing. No noise or pop up to say it has been detected. None of the troubleshooting I've found online is any good because it neither shows up in disk management or device manager. Its werid because they used to work and the machine is only a couple of months old. I've tried a fresh reinstall of windows and a refresh neither worked.

This has been bugging me for a while now. I've spent £800+ on a custom pc and this shit happens. Does anyone have any suggestions or is it time to replace my motherboard. The old one is probably still under warranty

Solution
That doesnt say much. As you said it correctly, its different for each CPU.
What I mean is the voltage that its set to, not the actual value. So there should be a section where you can change the voltages and they all should be set to auto. If there is an actual value in there that has been set manually, set it to auto.
But I doubt it, since you said yourself you didnt change anything.
So its most likely the motherboard is shot.
Hey Chris. Did you try the same flash drives with another computer just to exclude the odd chance that they've failed? Other than that, have you tried if other mass storage devices such as axternal HDDs work or other USB devices such as a keyboard/mouse etc. are OK when plugged into the USB ports? I'd recommend that you look for an update of the USB drivers in the motherboard manufacturer's website to see if the issue is fixed after installing them, or you could try rolling back a version as well.

Hope that helps.

yeahh I've tried them on my laptop they both work. I've got no external HDDs so not tried one yet. I assume I would have the same problem. My mouse and keyboard work fine so its just storage devices. Looked on the gigabyte website for drivers on my motherboard but no specific USB drivers and I already updated when I first built the machine. WIll a roll back help? how do I do it?

Did you try changing various USB settings in the BIOS yet? Is your CPU undervolted or overclocked?
Do you connect those flash drives via a cable or directly?
Also try removing your PC from power completely for a few mins. Ive had USB problems like that before with Gigabyte boards, but taking off power completely (turning off the PSU with the switch on it) always fixed them.

I'll try turning it off and on now. I haven't tried changing anything in the bios yet. can you suggest anything? How would i know if my CPU is undervolted? its not overclocked (or shouldn't be because i haven't done anything to it)
I can also confirm that my webcam will not work either. tried using it for a mic in-game but can't even get the pc to detect it.

It looks like only devices that use a lot of power over the USB port wont work, that suggest the voltage isnt high enough, thats why I asked if the PC is undervolted or any other voltage setting were changed manually. If everything is on auto/default, there shouldnt be a problem, unless the mainboard just isnt able to deliver enough power anymore due to a defect.

There should be a USB section in your BIOS/UEFI. Just change a few setting on the settings there (EHCI, XHCI, for example). If you have no clue about that better make a photo of that section and upload it.

@QSV has some good points, but if you're having issues with other devices as weel such as the camera, I'd recommend that you contact the manufacturer's customer support to inquire about the issue. If this is a laptop you're talking abouth as @QSV mentioned, there shouldn't be any problem with underpowered devices, especially such as a USB flash drive unless something is defective or there's a driver issue of some sort.
As for rolling back a driver, here's how to do it (although it doesn't sound to me like this is not a driver issue anymore): https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732648.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396 (this is for Windows 7, but the same instructions apply for Windows 8.1 as well). Note that it is possible that there might not be an older version of the drivers.

Im not sure how to upload pictures on here. In regards to the 2 settings you mentioned XHCI is enabled and EHCI is disabled. they are in the peripherals section. By cpu volts do you mean the CPU Vcore?

Thanks. its a custom build pc so the only thing i can do is replace the motherboard if I cannot get it to work. Which wouldn't be so bad but they hold the motherboard for a few days to test it before sending a replacement. I always thought that maybe the USB ports weren't getting enough power but wasn't sure on how to rectify it. Im hoping that is the problem.

Any voltage setting, that includes the CPU voltage. I had exactly the same problem once and all that was changed was the CPU voltage, which was turned 0.05V lower from the default value.

Any other settings you can change there?
Just try changing these to all possible values. But remember which they had originally.
I take it cutting power from you PC didnt help?

So the CPU VRIN is at 1.740V
the CPU Vcore 1.068V
and the RING voltage is 1.050V

not sure what the default is for them. I guess its different with each CPU.
there is a legacy usb support which is enabled also a XHCI mode which is on smart auto.

And no the complete power down didn't work. i tried not to get to hopeful.

yeah everything on that page was on auto. The Vcore was set to 1.056 but on the M.I.T page is said the vcore was 1.068. I think I will have to take her apart and send the mobo off :( I've only had it a couple of months. The worst thing is I tried to change it to an msi board before they sent it off but they had already sent it.

Just a quick question. When i get my replacement mobo which will be the same as the previous one can I just put it in my system and it will work or should I have a fresh installation of windows on my HDD first?

Should work without having to reinstall anything. Some software you use (most likely not Windows) might have to be registered again if the BIOS version is different or if its overly sensible to hardware changes.
