BSOD, then tested memory with Windows and Memtest86+

So, I had a BSOD during a game, thought nothing of it... till 4 weeks later (yesterday) I opened up Chrome and ..... BOOM! The same thing, black/green streaks then BSOD.

So I tested my memory and found out I had 19 errors , specially in the random run , of memtest86+ and the Windows memory tester does the same thing (tells me an issue).

I suppose the only thing to do is to pop'em out and RMA ?

However, I was thinking of trying to wait it out and re-buy the RAM and run 4 sticks of 2 to have 8 GBs.

Would this be OK with an Athlon II X4 640 ? Would it hurt anything to run 2x4 instead of "duel channel" ?

If the memory is a matched set then you will have to return it all for an RMA. If these are discretely purchased DIMMs then you need to identify which one is causing the problem and only RMA that one.

When you get your new memory, run MEMTEST overnight to verify the quality BEFORE you boot into Windows.

Can I go ahead and just repurchase that kit ? Then end up with 2x4 = 8 GBs in the end ? That way I don't have a system without RAM while RMA process ? Will I lose any performance ?

You should be able to purchase a new set and add the RMA parts back later. If you overclock your RAM you may not be able to when you have 4 sticks. Read the user's manual for your motherboard to find out the proper set of slots to use first and then the slots to add into.

To take advantage of 8GB RAM you must have Windows 64bit.

Not sure where you are - in the States can send request to rma@gskillusa.com else rma@gskill.com and GSkill will want the set. In the States turn around is pretty fast. As with any DRAM mixing two sets, even identical can be problematic, though if you go that route and have problems, give me a shout, I've been working with GSkill sticks for years and am a Admin on their forum site

That'll be the route I'm taking anyway, or was going to take soon, to keep up with gaming to get 8 GBs.

I just hadn't planned on paying the $40 for another Model F3-10666CL8D-4GBRM set right now.. but I did moments ago.

Well I finally got around to testing them separate and they pass. The sticker says 8-8-8-24 , so I manually changed the BIOS setting to 8-8-8-24 and 1333MHz. Still fails after putting the sticks back together.

So anyone else got any other ideas besides RMA ? Or is it memory controller ? I updated the BIOS to the latest version too and still nothing running 2 sticks.
