Hi I recently was forced to updated to win 8.1 by a popup wins dialog that coudt not be exited in any way , so I installed it, and after it re-booted, I was left with a black screen and my cursor.

I can press Ctrl+Alt+Del and start task manager and open Cmd, and scrome.

Thing that have not worked:

Booting in safe mode
Updating graphics driver
Starting Exsplorer.exe (can't find in task manger either)

This that have somewhat worried:

writing sfc /scannow. But after reboing everything was fine, but the system rebooted by it self, after 30 sec (no dialog) and I was again left with back screen.

Please not I have not made a recovery disk, and I haven't got a install disk or a win 8.1 standby PC.

Please any help woudt be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for my bad English

Are you using "Start is Back" or Classic Shell by chance? Finally solved mine after 4 days of trying usb boots of different tools and safe mode driver re-installs. Mine turned out to be a simple fix, just uninstalled Start Is Back, and I'm back to normal.

To access your hard drive, open task manager, click on Start Up tab, right click on a process and choose open file location. At least this will give you some functionality to do some tests, or force to boot to safe mode in the control panel.
